About Journey to Better Reading

I created Journey to Better Reading because I believe every child deserves the opportunity to become a confident reader—and every adult who supports children deserves access to trustworthy, evidence-informed guidance.

For more than thirty years, I have worked alongside children, educators, and families as a classroom teacher, reading specialist, literacy coach, instructional support specialist, and school readiness coach. Across these roles, one purpose has remained constant: helping others better understand how reading develops, why some children struggle, and how we can support them more effectively.

I am currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Literacy, where my work continues to explore the connection between literacy research and everyday practice. I am especially interested in dyslexia, early identification of reading difficulties, and how multiple sources of evidence can help us understand what an individual learner needs rather than relying on a single score, assessment, or label.

My goal is to help bridge the gap between what research tells us and what we actually do with that knowledge in classrooms, intervention settings, and homes.

I believe effective literacy instruction is both a science and a human endeavor. Research provides an essential foundation, but thoughtful educators, engaged families, and meaningful relationships bring that research to life. No program, assessment, or instructional approach can replace carefully observing how a child responds to instruction and using that evidence to determine what should happen next.

When we better understand how children learn to read and recognize when that learning is not unfolding as expected, we are better equipped to respond with knowledge, confidence, compassion, and purpose.
